Erich Mayer has reviewed Angelo Candalepas: Australian Islamic Mission for ArtsHub Writing & Publishing: “Angelo Candalepas: Australian Islamic Mission records a significant and rare achievement – the building of a beautiful, modern, architect-designed place of worship.’
While noting that some of the more detailed sections “are not designed for the layperson”, Mayer highlights both Angelo Candalepas' and Maryam Gusheh's essays as providing comments of interest to the general public.
He particularly enjoyed Candalepas' comments on the nature of concrete – “By taking every effort to ensure a craftsman-like result, concrete forms offer a playfulness or joy to the eye.”
Mayer also comments that Gusheh's essay ‘From prayer hall to a contemporary mosque’, “documents her expert independent view of relevant contemporary architectural trends as well as her professional appraisal of the mosque.”
“This is a worthy tribute to the board and members of AIM, who transformed their place of worship from humble rented premises to an iconic building.”
